This is the third piece for the series of artwork based on North American wildlife and Native American craft and culture (for a better description, see ‘Sacred Ceremony’). A brown bear stirs up some spirit medicine in his bowl. I like the way the composition came out and it was as realistic as I had managed to get my drawn details so far. Don't really like the highlights in the fur though. They stayed a little too white for my liking. (Artwork © Leona Preston 2005)

Whistle Smoke by Leona Preston

This is the second piece for the series of artwork based on North American wildlife and Native American craft and culture (for a better description, see ‘Sacred Ceremony’). A grey wolf smokes his handcrafted totem pipe. The wolf head on the pipe is inspired by a wooden carving that I own myself. The composition came out nicely, yet I find that I may have gone a little too dark again… especially on the ears and muzzle. The fur and feather texture is as I wanted, but I wish the darn colours hadn’t faded so fast! Erh! (Artwork © Leona Preston 2005)

Sacred Ceremony by Leona Preston

This is the first piece in a series of artwork that is still technically ongoing (which I am working on over an uncertain length of time). Featuring anthropomorphic characterisations of North American wildlife and influenced by Native American Indian craft and culture. The art direction is something different to what I usually do, and this is quite a leap for me. I don’t usually concern myself over consistency in style and I’ve paid painful attention to the element of realism here… the characters are not my usual ‘animal head on human body’ result and I’ve completely reviewed the anatomy. Back to the actual art; a coyote performs a sacred smudging ceremony with bound sage bundle and feather fan. I’m a sucker for feathers! :p (Artwork © Leona Preston 2005)
